– Thomas R. Jones –
Amphibians and Reptiles Program Manager,
Arizona Game & Fish Department

Amphibian and reptile conservation has a long history at the Arizona Game and Fish Department, but it made its first significant leap in the early 1980s with the formation of the Nongame Branch. My presentation will attempt to describe the 40+ year history of the “Herps Program” which, with changes in funding, staff, and focus, has evolved considerably since Cecil Schwalbe first occupied that tiny office in the little blue trailer stuck behind the Game and Fish headquarters building.

Thomas R. Jones is the Amphibians and Reptiles Program Manager for the Arizona Game and Fish Department, where he oversees conservation and management of amphibians and reptiles. He received a B.S. and M.S. at Auburn University, and a Ph.D. at Arizona State University. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Michigan, a Visiting Assistant Professor at East Carolina University, and for 11 years he was a professor at Grand Canyon University. His research and conservation interests include ecology, population and conservation biology of amphibians and reptiles. He has done field work in much of the continental United States, and in México, Panamá, Costa Rica, and Vietnam. These days his time is spent coordinating high priority amphibian and reptile conservation efforts; which means he sits at a desk most of the time.
